Father, Ben Crawford of Belview, KY. Sticking by Decision to Let 6 Year Old Run

Ben Crawford wrote a book about hiking with his entire family across the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail. Now he is going to cash in on forcing his child to run in the Flying Pig Marathon.

He posted on Instagram that his son cried during the race, but said it was only because he fell, and defended his actions:

We have never forced any of our children to run a marathon and we cannot even imagine that as feasible practically or emotionally. We have given all of our kids the option for every race. Last year two kids ran it without us. In 9 years we have been awarded a total of 53 medals – mostly to the kids. This year after begging to join us we allowed our 6 year old to train and attempt it. Both parents gave him a 50/50 chance of completing it and were ready to pull the plug at any moment if he requested it or if we viewed his safety at risk. We asked him numerous times if he wanted to stop and he was VERY clear that his preference was to continue. We did not see any sign of heat exhaustion or dehydration and honored his request to keep on going.

2. Yes there were tears. He had a fall and every single member of our family has cried during marathons. These experiences were very limited compared to what has been reported and despite the incredible physical and emotional difficulty of running a marathon the amount of his crying is comparable to what we would have experienced had we stayed home on a Sunday morning. Many people are inaccurately reporting that people saw him for the “entire” or “majority” of the race crying and that there are numerous witnesses. With our finishing time this is impossible as we finished the last 5 miles predominately alone and most people’s experience with us was in a one time passing of 30 seconds. Those making these confident and absolute assertions do not have any evidence. We have hours of video footage and images that will be released that depict his emotional state very clearly.

Crawford stopped at the 20-mile mark and pushed his child the rest of the way.  He was heard saying the kid wanted to stop every 3 minutes but pushed on, as the family took eight hours to finish.

In an open letter, Flying Pig CEO Iris Simpson Bush took responsibility for allowing the boy to run.

She wrote the family had previously run in races without registering, a practice known as “banditing”: The family finished the race after the formal closure of the race course.

I assume full responsibility for the decision and accept that it was not the best course of action. Our requirement of 18+ for participation in the marathon will be strictly observed moving forward.  Coach Flanagan says this should be a cautionary tale for other marathons around the country.

Gang Of Clowns Freaking Out Town

The Essex Echo reports that multiple residents of the area have reported on social media about hearing the scary-sounding music in the middle of the night.

One person, a 30-year-old resident who asked to remain anonymous, told the Echo the clowns followed him one night at around 2 a.m. and allegedly began to chase him.

“I just want anyone is traveling around Laindon late at night to please be careful, as I have been followed by four men in a van, who looked like they were wearing clown costumes,” he told the Echo.

“I started to run as they were following me, and eventually managed to get away. “They also had a massive speaker on top of the van which was playing creepy music.

“It has made me feel really scared to walk out late at night on my own. “It worries me that this is happening in my area, as it is scary, creepy and weird.”

Another area resident, a 35-year-old woman, told the Echo, “I have four children, and late at night these men are playing ridiculously scary music keeping them awake going around Laindon.

“My children now want to move as they are scared. We just don’t know what to do.”

Essex Police say they have had no official reports about the gang of clowns, but Councillor Alex Harrison did say, “If they are playing really loud, scary music, it is something that the police need to look into. And also, as councillor myself, I will now be speaking to people about this and whether they have heard it too.”

Priceless Artifact Found At Goodwill Store

An antiques dealer made the find of a lifetime at a Texas Goodwill store: a 2,000-year-old priceless work of Roman art that she scooped up for $35. Laura Young, of Austin, found the 52-pound Roman bust at the thrift store in her hometown in 2018 and figured it was worth such a modest investment. “He looked Roman. He looked old,” Young said. “In the sunlight, it looked like something that could be very, very special.” A Sotheby’s consultant later determined her extraordinary find to be a marble Roman bust that dates from the late first century BC to the early first century AD.

Dead Priest’s Niece Blocks sale of Judy Garland ‘Wizard of Oz’ Dress

The dress was missing for decades before it was found at a Catholic university last year. The priest’s niece, Barbara Hartke, says the valuable piece of Hollywood memorabilia belonged to her late uncle.  The dress was a gift from Mercedes McCambridge, an Academy Award-winning actress and friend of Garland’s who was artist-in-residence at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., between 1972 and 1973, she gave it to Dominican Father Gilbert Hartke, founder of the school’s drama department. (McCambridge, incidentally, is known for providing the voice of the demon in 1973′s religious-horror classic “The Exorcist,” which was shot and set in D.C.).  While Catholic University has claimed ownership of the dress, Hartke’s 81-year-old niece argues that the dress belongs to his estate because McCambridge “specifically and publicly” gave it to Gilbert Hartke. The blue and white gingham dress, believed to be one of six original dresses from the film is slated to be sold at auction on May 24 and could snare anywhere between $800,000 and $1.2 million, Bonhams New York said.
